Her novel will be all too familiar to today’s young people. Her collection of essays on her life are engaging, provocative, and hilarious. She gives details about her life that dig deeper than the headlines we see in the papers and on television. Union went to a high school in California where she was one of only a few African-American students, a dynamic that would be challenging for anyone. She also musters up the courage to describe the story of being raped, along with what the aftermath entailed. She shares how she’s successfully navigated Hollywood, lost a friend she loved, and what it’s like being a stepmom.

What are critics saying about it?

“Union’s collection of wide-ranging, insightful, and funny essays is full of the candid stuff that readers love to find in celebrity memoirs, along with genuine storytelling and bare emotion, which are rarer… Throughout, Union is warm, outspoken, laugh-out-loud funny, and unafraid to reveal painful moments or the versions of herself that had a thing or two to learn. This is sure to be a crowd-pleaser, and deservedly so.” - Booklist

“This sparkling book collects amusing and heartbreaking stories from the life of actress Union (Being Mary Jane)… Union’s no-holds-barred essays and intimate voice will appeal to her fans as well as those less familiar with her work.” - Publisher’s Weekly

“With honesty and humor, Union bares her soul and shares her levels of insecurity, the difficulties of being a black woman in Hollywood, and the way fame has changed her life. She embraces many multilayered issues in these intimate essays, giving readers glimpses of insight into her soul.” —Kirkus Reviews

“We’re Going to Need More Wine” is the perfect addition to your spring reading list — you’ll feel like you’ve just had coffee with a friend. If you’ve been looking for ways to nourish your soul – here’s the answer.
